SME

SME was formed in 1946 as “The Scale Model Equipment Company” to manufacture scale models and parts for the model engineering trade. In 1959 founder Alastair Robertson-Aikman required a pick-up arm for his own use and an experimental model was built. It received such an enthusiastic reception from friends in the sound industry that it was decided to produce it commercially and the first SME precision pick-up arm appeared in September 1959. At this time the company’s name was changed to SME Limited.

Having subsequently developed several ground-breaking turntable designs, the company has built a very strong reputation for engineering excellence and has recently introduced a new entry level Model 8 turntable and also the mid-range Model 35.

Attention to detail has always been an essential ingredient in any SME product and now contemporary features can be provided through the availability of different chassis colour options as anodising of the components is carried out in-house as part of the manufacturing process. Indeed the top-of-the-range Model 60 can be specified in any colour by the customer under the bespoke One of One programme!
